Gosforth

The village of Gosforth lays in a shallow dip at the lower end of Wasdale and is surrounded by the most dramatic scenery. Famously home to England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike, and deepest lake, Wastwater, Wasdale stretches from Wasdale Head at the foot of Scafell to the coast a short way from the cottage.

Wasdale

Wasdale is the wild child of the western Lake District with its dramatic steep sided valley leading up to Wasdale Head, which is towered over by the highest fells in England. Yet for all its wild splendour a summer picnic on the shores of Wastwater can be just as idyllic as a day on a beach far away. Mind you the water is very cold and very deep so take care!

Wastwater is a great place to brush up on your scuba diving skills with clear cold water down to depths of over 50metres, but you will require your own equipment as there is no dive centre near by. Great for paddle boarding, kayaking and wild swimming with the right amount of training.

The Wasdale Head Hotel is situated at the top of the valley and is open throughout the summer, usually with a good range of ales.

The location has it all-majestic peaks, beautiful valleys and a fine stretch of sandy beach all within reach from the cottage door. This westem side of the lakes is less touristy than the sometimes overly busy Windermere and Ambleside area. Many a Wainwright peak and fell can be claimed without bumping into numerous other walkers. In addition to Scafell itself, the peaks of Great Gable, Yewbarrow, Kirk Fell and Seatallan are yours for the taking. Climbers, mountain bikers and those wishing to enjoy watersports on Wastwater itself will find plenty to do. There are many bridle paths that allow mountain bikes including the popular and challenging Black Sail Pass, Styhead Pass and Bummoor Tarn.

As well as enjoying the local scenery, there is more than just mountains!

The village probably founded by the Vikings has the tallest Viking Cross in the Country which stands in the church yard of St Mary's. Other ancient relics from the age of the Vikings can be found in and around the church.
